MANCHESTER, N.H. — Texas Gov. Rick Perry touted his position on immigration in New Hampshire today with a special guest in tow, an Arizona sheriff known for his own tough line on the border.
The endorsement of Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., may help Perry connect with voters who are skeptical of legislation he signed granting in-state tuition to some illegal immigrants at Texas public universities. At a debate this fall, Perry called opponents of the plan “heartless.”
Fellow presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich brought the issue to the fore at the last G.O.P. presidential debate when he advocated immigration reform which would allow some established immigrants to remain in the country, though without some privileges such as voting.
Rivals called the plan amnesty, and Perry today was adamant about his opposition to any plan including amnesty.
Arpaio was a backer of a controversial immigration law in Arizona. Perry today repeated his pledge, should he become president, to have the U.S.-Mexico border sealed to illegal crossings within 12 months of inauguration.
Perry holds a town hall-style meeting in Derry, N.H., tonight, and holds two events in the state on Wednesday.
